Playa del Carmen is just remote enough that the beach – really the only one there is – doesn’t have a proper name. Still, it’s the highlight of most vacationers. Time in the area makes for a delightful way to spend your afternoons.
Most vacationers will have direct access to the beachfront, such as lounge chairs and sometimes even water sports equipment. The majority of the area’s top resorts and hotels are stationed along this prime stretch of clean, soft sand.
The 2-mile white sand beach of Playa del Carmen is divided into two areas; Central Playa del Carmen beach and North Playa del Carmen beach. The symbolic division point is the second ferry pier located at the bottom of Av. Constituyentes, a main traffic route into the city. The feel is very different on each beach. With ‘Old Playa’ felt on the central beach and ‘Trending Playa’ felt on the north beach.
What many Playa del Carmen visitors love about this city is the diversity of beach vibes. We are not sure if anyone gets tired of the beach, and from the look of the daily activity that goes on, we don’t think anyone does. With so many venues to entertain you and over 2 miles of beach to discover in the city limits, (there are more beaches just outside the city limits within walking distance), there is more entertaining than one could hope for.
Originally a small fishing town, tourism to Playa del Carmen began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel. An island across the Cozumel Channel and a world-famous scuba diving destination.
Playa del Carmen has recently undergone extreme rapid development with new luxury residential condominium buildings, restaurants, boutiques and entertainment venues. In addition tourist activity in Playa del Carmen centers on Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, which stretches from Calle 1 norte to Calle 40. A pedestrian walkway located just one or two blocks inland from the beach, also Fifth Avenue is lined with hundreds of shops, bars and restaurants. There are many small boutique hotels on and just off Fifth Avenue and on the beach.
